In the old school traditions, most orders, covens and circles would categorise magick in 2 ways: black magick and white magick. Black represented all things self-centred, self-ish, and often meant the raising of oneself "above" the community in some way. White magick then was the desire to do good, to become one with god, to be self-less and "serve" the community.... There are still many magicians and witches who will say "i only engage in white magick" and many who say the same for "black magick". It's not a huge stretch from there to equate black=evilwhite=good which is incredibly dangerous thinking !! Early in the last century, magicians started saying, "i'm not a black magician, i'm not a white magician, i'm a grey magician!" which was their way of distancing themselves from the whole black/white dualistic thinking. it was their enlightened way of saying "there is no absolute good, no absolute evil" there is just magick.... so grey magicians became the norm.... Along came chaos magic - and the world was changed forever. the central shared hallucination in chaos magic is the chaos star. this is an 8 rayed star with each ray being of a different colour. this is really the real advent of colour magick and the thinking goes along the lines of "hey you! wake up grey magician and smell the flowers!" The 8 rays of the colourful chaos star are brilliant hues and suggest that magick isn't limited to the black/white and grey but magick exists in the full spectrum and is in all things and is brilliant and powerful and is everwhere. woohoo! magick is black/white/red/pink/purple/grey/gold/blue/stripey/transparent/ chameleonic/orange/green or red like the beautiful hair Venus wears on her head....
