- I just sat through a movie called "American Beauty" and couldn't help but think that it was really about one small group of people's small attempt at colouring their own grey....
- What about Willie Wonka?
- Most films (and story telling in general) deal with taking the
mundane to extraordinary circumstances exploring the growth of the
spirit that happens. Sadly I think the regular person participates
vicariously via film and gets a quick fix of colour without actually
taking responsibility for it or even recognising the need to, instead
just living in want and frustration.
American Beauty is divine, I love that movie. So many mentioned in
this thread fit the theme. One of my other faves are True Lies and
What Dreams May Come.
Then there's the curious thing of the reluctant hero who just wants
to live a quiet life and happy to be invisible (eg Bladerunner and
almost all the Cohen Brothers films) but can't escape it. I suppose
it's the balance that's important because they are too aware of the
highs and lows and it's with them always.
-
I remember one movie that has made an impression - Pay it forward (Haley
Joel Osment, Kevin Spacey & Helen Hunt).
- (btw, off on a tangent, did you guys get your idea from this from the Power Puff girls episode where the town turned black and white by some evil mime? Or maybe they copied you...).
- Sort of in the same vein I think is Magnolia. The whole synchronistic
effect is quite heartening. The acceptance that these things happen I think
would shed some colour on an otherwise grey situation. Not necessarily a
deterministic outlook but more of an understanding of our actions have
aeffects. But then magick takes this a few steps further. Delightful.
- Anyone seen any Negetive Land videos? They take Grey and make it colourful.
- Next; one of my favorite movies is "True Stories," by David Bryne(Yes the singer from Talking Heads). It kind of takes grey and makes it colourful too by looking at it in new ways. Its more complex then that, but it has John Goodman and random towns folk singing Talking Heads songs! Yes! Yes! Yes! (I love this movie(I am actually just making reasons to tell others about this movie because it is soooo good and not very many know about it, its probably a large stretch to actually say it could fall in line with CTG though.....))
- "Liquid Sky," could be a CTG film as well. Especially when you get towards the end!

Patch Adams
Dead Poets'Society

Good Mourning Viet Nam
What Dreams may come
Jumanji

The Fisher King
...should I go on?
ROBIN WILLIAMS Colours the Grey... big time!!!
"Beginning as a seventh-grade class assignment to put into action an
idea that could change the world, young Trevor McKinney (Haley Joel
Osment) comes up with a plan to do good deeds for three people who then
by way of payment each must do good turns for three other people. These
nine people also must pay it forward and so on, ad infinitum. If
successful, the resulting network of do-gooders ought to comprise the
entire world."
- you could argue that dead poet's society was a CTG flick
- also, of course the old classic wizard of Oz, dorothy wanders into hallucinogenic technicolour world and comes back to kansas a very different woman.
- thelma and louise is all about chucking off the grey noramlity and expectation and acceptance of the very bullshit that clutters our minds and souls and stops us from flying.
- oh yeah, and the winner of the CTG movie award(from my opinion only) is:
Pleasantville, if you haven't seen it you must!
- Life is Beautiful. All in Italian, one must read the
subtitles if don't know Italian, but a very beautiful
movie that could be looked at from the Colouring
perspective.
- Hmmm, I think I have to mention Monty Python's Holy Grail. Not just for the
finished product, but mostly for the fact that a gang of highly colourful
individuals produced it all on a shoestring. No horses, no problem, we'll
just use coconuts. You can't beat it!
- _The Wizard of Speed and Time_, though that is probably more madcap than
grey colouring..
- Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Breakfast club? For the cheesy options.... Must
some more good ones
I suppose anything with a mid-life crisis would count...
- Fisher King, a great examination of synchronisity and the need for colour and imagination in an often dark, cynical world.
Additionally, anything else by Terry Gilliam.
