Speaking of Grey flicks, I got hold of a copy of 'They Live' a few days ago, very very grey, for those of you who haven't seen it here is my review ;)

Set in the late 80's the world has become a captilist and commercial place, the poor get poorer, the homeless are rife, and the rich have everything. Every day it gets worse, our hero (Played by Roddy Piper) spends the first 30 minutes or so observing the world, letting the viewer see what's going on, then he comes across a cult of sorts who 'know' the face of the enemy. He gets hold of a pair of sunglasses that let him see the truth around him and we get to see behind the scenes of the world. Everything is grey, and the posters are all blank with commands written on them, magazines have no content just orders, things like "sleep", "Consume", "Marry and Reproduce", "no thought" and many many more, with the classic "This is your God" written on money. Our hero destroys their braodcast tower waking people from the dream and revolution occurs (or is implied)

I couldn't help but watch it and draw oh so many parrels between the world now and what we're doing. It also makes me think that we're doing nothing new and that soon we'll all bump into those who've been fighting the grey for longer.

Or something.

Woohoo

Diablo.

Your review made me think of a movie I haven't seen in a long time, nor have I read the book in awhile: 1984 by George Orwell. Can't remember if it ends colourfully or not, but it sure is a grey book.

(Here's a snippet of a review found on Amazon.com: "In a grim city and a terrifying country, where Big Brother is always Watching You and the Thought Police can practically read your mind, Winston is a man in grave danger for the simple reason that his memory still functions. He knows the Party's official image of the world is a fluid fiction. He knows the Party controls the people by feeding them lies and narrowing their imaginations through a process of bewilderment and brutalization that alienates each individual from his fellows and deprives him of every liberating human pursuit from reasoned inquiry to sexual passion. Drawn into a forbidden love affair, Winston finds the courage to join a secret revolutionary organization called The Brotherhood, dedicated to the destruction of the Party. Together with his beloved Julia, he hazards his life in a deadly match against the powers that be.")

In fact, it does not end colourfully. But then, Orwell admitted that he didn't believe that humanity had it in them to change the grey static system they lived in.

On a side note, if you look at the Boy-King Bush's domestic and foreign strategies recently, you will begin to notice a number of similarities between Orwell's work and the same. It's like he's using it as a play book for his administration. :-P More and more of us here in the States are recognizing that, thankfully. Soon, we'll be mobilized enough to wake everybody else up to it.

Much Love and State-Smashing Colour,

If its got Roddy Piper in it its got to be great! I have a faint memory of watching this when I was young..

Matrix did anyone mention that, its gotta be a colour the grey type movie right? And I guess the music of rage against the machine would count too in an angry teen kinda way :)

Thumbs up for They Live!

The Matrix is a tricky one. I mean wonderful movie and all, I loved it, but you can interpret it in so many ways. I suppose Neo is more archetypal magician than Christ figure, but the roles blend. Depends where you take it beyond the end I suppose...and it is very much the movie of The Invisibles!

Whatabout Dark City? In many ways even more cool.

Wassail! Vlad Kiosk 567

You know I've still never seen Dark City, I imagine it'll come on Channel 4 now that I've said that (its one of my talents) :)

I was thinking of the Matrix along the lines of we're all just power generators for "the system" and finding colour would be breaking free as neo does, although the shooting humans bit still doesn't sit right with me - Gun Porn for Web designers someone called it ;) But yeah allot of Invisibles ripping off going on there...
